Wind Energy

Jeffrey Energy Center

Aquila currently gets electricity from two 750-kilowatt windmills constructed in 1999 near the Jeffrey Energy Center north of Topeka, Kansas. Aquila owns 16 percent of the energy center, including the project's two windmills, and receives 16 percent of the windmills' yearly output of 3.6 million kilowatt-hours. Half of the company's supply goes to Kansas customers and the other half to Missouri customers.

Some stats on the Jeffrey wind turbines (pictured below):

  • Each turbine is 170 feet tall.
  • The turbines have three blades. Each blade is 75 feet long and weighs 2,500 pounds.
  • The units also have automatic sensors that detect wind direction and speed. Turbines turn automatically to face into the wind and vary blade pitch based on wind speed. Too windy? The blade pitch shifts to neutral and the blades stop turning.
